1Tips and Tricks for Getting the Most Out of PubMed
Susan J. Arnold, MS, MLIS, AHIP, RD
PubMed, the National Library of Medicine’s portal to its MEDLINE database, is a wonderful resource that is freely available on the Internet at http://pubmed.gov. With its Google-like simplicity, it is easy for anyone to enter keywords in the search box and produce results. However, my experience in working at an academic health sciences library is that many health professionals under-utilize its capabilities.
4Chair's Corner
Sue Konek, MA, RD, CSP, CNSD, LD
This has been an excellent year for PNPG! And, as the ADA and PNPG year came to a close at the end of May, it was a good time to consider all the work that has been done to support our PNPG members. We follow our PNPG Mission, "Leading the future of pediatric nutrition through education, research and service," to direct the activities of our year. And there has been much activity this year!

5Getting Started in Research
Katie McDonald, PhD, RD, CSP
"Research is the foundation of our profession," according to Jessie Pavlinac, MS, RD, CSR, LD, president of the American Dietetic Association (ADA). In her April 2010 President’s Page in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, Ms. Pavlinac described the ADA's plan to broaden research to deliver high-quality nutrition services through evidence-based practice. The Pediatric Nutrition Practice Group (PNPG) concurs with this vision of many pediatric dietitians actively advancing evidence-based practice. PNPG members Douglas Drenckpohl, Patricia A. Esposito, and Linda Heller enthusiastically endorse research within their practices.
6The Development of the Electronic Pediatric Nutrition Care Manual: Created with You in Mind
Paula Charuhas Macris, MS, RD, CSO, FADA, CD
In 1998, the Pediatric Nutrition Practice Group (PNPG) of the American Dietetic Association (ADA) developed the first edition of the Pediatric Nutrition Care Manual (NCM) to serve as a guide for dietetics professionals, physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals working in pediatric care. The Pediatric NCM covered nutrition care of infants and children and was well-received by pediatric clinicians across the country. By 2003, the ADA published a second edition that offered a more reference-based approach to pediatric care. Further work on the Pediatric NCM brings us to the point that an electronic version is now available as an up-to-date resource on pediatric nutrition care. A description of the process to create the electronic Pediatric NCM - conception to launch - is described below.
6Public Policy Update
Kathryn Moseley, MS, RD
We pediatric dietitians have our work cut out for us! There are many initiatives and opportunities for us to get involved with and make a difference. These include the Child Nutrition Program to end hunger and the first lady's childhood obesity initiative.
7Dietitians of Canada Pediatric Nutrition Network Report
Nicole Cave, RD, CSP
It has been a busy year for the Dietitians of Canada Pediatric Nutrition Network (DCPNN). The release of the WHO growth charts several years ago prompted a review of growth monitoring practices in Canada. Since that time, Dietitians of Canada, Canadian Paediatric Society, The College of Family Physicians of Canada and Community Health Nurses of Canada have worked collaboratively towards developing consistent practices for monitoring growth in Canada.
82010 Member Survey
Mimi Kaufman, MPH, RD, LD
Thanks to 277 PNPG members who completed the member survey, the leadership had extra-valuable information to use at the Spring Executive Meeting in our strategic planning session for the next 3 years. Besides the scoreable answers, we got many comments.
8Speaker Stipend Awards
Karen Wilson, MS, RD, CSP
Speaker stipend awards provide support for continuing education activities that focus on pediatric nutrition. The application is available on the PNPG Web site, www.pediatricnutrition.org. Go to the member benefits section, then to "Scholarships."
