In 2000, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) published new growth charts that used Body Mass Index (BMI) instead of weight-forheight to assess weight status of children over age two. Since that time, discussions about the interpretation of BMI have continued among health professionals, and confusion remains both within the healthcare field and in the general population about the meaning of the BMI.

Molly Kellogg offers guidance for the nutrition counselor and/or therapist in this wonderful user-friendly workbook. She divides the book into 25 Counseling Tips that can be read from beginning to the end but she prefers to think of it as a resource “designed to wander around in.”

Since the last newsletter, two public policy issues have come to light that can give dietitians the opportunity to play a stronger role in the health and well being of children. The two issues are administrative and benefit changes to Ryan White HIV/AIDS programs, as well as the potential for strengthening nutrition in the upcoming reauthorization of SCHIP.
